Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
