PSG Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening trophy on 14 separate times.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic leveler followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the showdown featuring the French league winners and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early on.

Yet, Marseille fired twice late to take a shock lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital leveler in the final moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving crucial attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing penalty victory.

The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
