Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
