Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Background on Conviction

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
