The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
